Handel & Mozart
Cantoris is going back to its "roots" for our November 9th concert. Not a repertoire for the faint-hearted for both singers and the audience!
Cantoris will be performing two lively sacred choral compositions - the dramatic Dixit Dominus by Handel and the spirited Vesperae solennes de confessore by Mozart. Handel composed his setting of the Latin text for Psalm 110 in 1707 at the age of 22, while in Italy. Mozart had apparently admired this composition, saying "Handel understands effect better than any of us—when he chooses, he strikes like a thunderbolt." Composed in 1780 for the Salzburg Cathedral, Vesperae solennes de confessore K.339 was Mozart's final choral work for the cathedral. It was intended for a special celebration of an undisclosed saint's day (the "confessor" of the title).
